Pupil & Parent Rights & Responsibilities

At the beginning of the academic year, school districts are required to notify parents and guardians of their rights and responsibilities pursuant to California Education Code (EC) Section 48980. Such notification promote parental understanding and involvement for all families in the school community. Under EC 48985, when 15 percent or more of pupils enrolled in a school speak a primary language other than English*, all notices and reports sent to the parents/guardians must also be written in the primary language and may be answered by the parents/guardians in either language. Because each legislative session brings changes which may affect notifications requirements, it is recommended that districts review all notices annually.

To review a copy of the parents' rights for the current school year and the complete version of Board Policies and Administrative Regulations related to Parents Rights, please contact your school office or Pupil Services Department.

*Parents' Rights are also available in Chinese, Spanish and Vietnamese.
