so welcome to our Garvey District Parent training on distance learning we are glad that you are joining us today over the Templar we will be presenting to you some information on distance learning and what you as parents and Guardians can do to support your child to make sure they are successful in meeting their learning goal you will surely be hearing and learning distance running over the next few months and we're here to support you in this school to home partnership that we hope will be even stronger from here on out next light first we have a few important note this presentation is being recorded it will be uploaded to the district website within the next few days so that you can revisit or share with other parents also you may have noticed that we have automatically muted your mic and we ask that you remain in this silent mode throughout the presentation to reduce some ambient noise there is a chat function where you can type your question starting now during the presentation and we will have a few at the end to address them if we do not get to your questions today don't worry we will save questions and address them via a frequently asked questions document on our District web page we will show you where that I that is later in the presentation you can also email your teacher or principal or you can call the District Parent hotlines and will give you those numbers at the end remember next remember that classes due start on Monday August 24th next I want to first introduce you to our Garvey team today my name is Lotus Elise and I'm the director of special projects for the district in our department we have our Energy Services specialist Stephanie Garcia and Rebecca soon and we have our education technology and Innovation team here led by their new director Rudy Torres Rudy are you on would you like to say hello and introduce your team Laura realized yes would you like to introduce yourself and you'll go and tell Lena hi good morning hello everybody Welcome to our training oh did he cut out show all is I'll go ahead and introduce yoga Bachata she has a wonderful part Elsa that is supporting him today you'll hear more about her little later lunch and then we do have these Helena Tran Polina do you want to make your hand okay great so we'll move on. We also have a very special group of teachers who have been instrumental in helping us put together this presentation and they are currently supporting professional development around distance learning for our Decatur they are mrs. on Escalante mrs. van Nguyen and mrs. Rachel Wong Miss Rachel flashlight we have three goals today the first is to give you some information about the user psychology as it pertains to distance learning think Garden II is to discuss expectations for the student during distance learning in the last goal is to capture and answer as many of your questions as we can get to next fight every student that is provided with a district to buy such as a laptop or Chromebook will be expected to follow certain rules and expectations the acceptable use of Technology form outlines these rules and we're asking parents beat it carefully to become familiar with those expectations the form has already been mailed home it's been emailed as well and also will be posted on the district website the form is part of the registration process and you do not to return at this time some important responsibilities it out signs are that the student needs to be active and respectful during distance learning and they cannot record the lesson without permission first they may also be subject to discipline is there is misbehavior so pretty much the same rules for Behavior would apply during distance learning as they would in any classroom it also contains other important components are on privacy and consequences that you should become familiar with next fight so on June 29th our governor governor Newsom signed Senate Bill 98 into law that includes requirements regarding distance learning and in-person inspection for the 2020-21 school year 98 defines distance learning as instruction in which the student and teacher are in different locations and students are under the general supervision of a certificated employee it also states that districts must document daily participation of each student on each school day if the student does not participate in distance learning then they must be more artistic must document Ali student participation when providing distance learning it's worth repeating that regular attendance and participation are as essential during distance learning as they are doing traditional in person in setting up the right learning environment at home is just as important as having the right technology tools and devices the district wants to make sure that they have every student has what they need and last year during the Spring of 2020 we were able to provide more than 3,000 devices this school year every new student will be provided with a device we will also provide backpacks with all the materials and work books that are students need at home each School site will be notifying their parents as to the schedules for distribution of the backpacks Beyond. We want home parents are able to create an effective learning space for students we know that this can be especially challenging for those movie with multiple kids or even multiple parents working from home so trying to choose quiet well-lit areas free of distractions will be important to remember that whatever is going on behind the student can be seen on everyone and that the microphones can transfer everything going on immediately around the student so we want to be mindful of that as well next fight another important thing that will be sent home in each backpack is a daily school schedule here you see one example of what the school schedule might look like for a 1st through 3rd grader so if you cook here you see that the teacher is expecting the second grade school to be ready at 8:30 in the morning this means that the student would have to be in front of the screen with the computer on and their English language arts material is ready because the teacher will be taking attendance after the first live lesson there will be a little boy before the next five lesson at 9:30 a.m. the purpose of the break time is to allow the student to complete the assignment for the previous light lesson but also to allow the child to rest his eyes away from the screen you will notice that this teacher will be available virtually during office hours for parents and students who need help or have questions each teacher will explain how their office hours will work on Wednesdays all students must check in with their teacher in order to be counted in the daily attendance however they may be given offline assignments to do on this day for some students maybe by the teacher to join the small group for lies and Iran for a few hours for example please know that these daily schedules only applied during distance learning next fight so here is what the intermediate daily school schedule. distance learning will look like if you click you will notice that on there right side we have students set up and what we call a block schedule which means that the subject matter will be taught only one block of time once a week other than once daily oblak. One two and three are taught on Mondays and Thursdays and. 436 are on Tuesday and Friday on the left you'll notice that the school has 50 minute block periods with breaks in between next just as with Elementary level on Wednesdays all students will check in for attendance but then the teacher May assign independent work offline to some students while selecting a small good for support online you know that Virtual Office hours will also begin be available again the schedules will be provided for each student career to school starting and now we'll turn it over to yoga Lovato to talk about some of the technology we will be used during distance learning thank you Moana good morning everyone my name is and I will be really going over the device you're using for daily instruction once school starts your child a laptop or Chromebook from there school for basic laptop and Chromebook instruction that will be made available to you on our District web page under the distance learning resources tab you will see instructions on how to turn on the device and login or don't you think Chromebooks first plug in the Chromebook to an outlet to charge open the Chromebook push the power button with the straight line to log another student students oh that's in the month and year format so for example 100 1200 to connect to the Wi-Fi to turn the computer off simplink on the settings panel to the bottom right and click on the power icon and your Chromebook shut down for those of you would laptops very similar instructions plug in the laptop to an outlet to charge open the left and push the power button left hand corner login as a student You're simply going to type in the password which is imminent lowercase there's more information on this document login to clever in Google Classroom on the Chromebook again all of this is more information on logging into clever and Google classroom now you're probably asking yourself what is clever copper is an easy way for students to access most of the learning applications that use at school with a single username and password students will be able to access apps such as Benchmark education ThinkCentral Big Ideas Math iStation better immersion I Chinese I ready Zoom teacher page videos what to show you how to login to clever and want to show you an overview of flipper you will have an opportunity to review the videos later on the District web page under the distance learning resources and follow along with your device at a slower pace let's see what it looks like what is the login to clever first open a Google Chrome browser once Google Chrome is open go to the very top and find the blue icon with letter c click on the blue icon so let's open up clever and take a look around first I'm going to open up on you Chrome browser and I'm going to click on the blue eyes stop with the letter c if this is the first time you're logging year you may be prompted to type in the students 2 you're going to select the email that ends with s g e s d if you do not see an email here with a GSD you're going to click on use another account and you're going to type in that email I'm going to enter the password again this will not work with your personal email that has to be the school issue email the one that ends with that gesc. Us what's the student is inside cover they will have access to many of the apps that use for daily instruction the different sections include favorite resources instant log applications hours called Google Apps clever help resources and more apps which will be communicated to them on Google classroom once school starts here is the Google Classroom app which you can access by clicking on the icon Google classroom in a little bit more detail pick up Google Classroom as a child digital linked to learning teacher assignments homework newsletters much more students will be able to email the teacher check their assignments turned in the silence check the greys and more to receive summary reports of their child again there are two videos on the right here once I show you how to login to Google classroom for the first time and one to give you an overview of Google Classroom I'm not going to click on the videos right now but you will opportunity to read at your own pace here is an example of what a guardian summary report look like you will receive a guardian summary invitation in your email so step one is to click except step two is to choose the frequency in which you want to see some Reba force and that would be weekly once schools in session you will be receiving these summary reports in your email the guardian summary report missing work activities such as announcements assignments and questions that were recently posted by the teachers let's open up a Google classroom and take a look around what song is this blue icon appear okay so here is the 9.7 and I'm going to select a Google Classroom icon here's the dashboard where I can select the classroom answer depending on the student he or she may have one or multiple classrooms so we can take a look inside on the top you see 3:10 stream class work and people the stream is consistory it's where you might have announcements 10 classwork teacher upcoming box this is where students will be able to see that has been assigned to them return work with Grace and missing assignments what's forecast is where students will be able to find materials quizzes and tests but generally you might see topics such as language arts writing and others the people that is where they will be able to see who their teacher is and they will be you're on the right there is a little icon for an envelope and this is where the students will be able to email their classmates you will be getting instructions about joining Google Classroom once school starts thank you and I'm going to have this presentation back to Lauda thank you Yoko so next slide we will be updating and posting these additional resources and information including talked about and the frequently asked questions document in our district website and how you get there and if he clicked first you go to the main page you want to click on this yoga great so you'll probably notice this because you said you saw it at the beginning of joining this presentation if you go step number two which Next Step you would then go to the icon that says distance learning and the next you would see that you could go to distance learning resources that is where you will find all of the information from today as well as more resources and information that will be developing and another way if you cook what is affected. You have the address you could go there directly and it appears in blue next and now we can take some questions first we'll take the questions from the chat that we can answer and the first one is for mr. Rudy Torres I think he's back online now so where do you like to say hello in the first question for how and when will children receive a laptop good morning everybody and and first I want to thank you for your patience I had a big technology hiccup I couldn't see anybody but I knew you were there so thank you very much answer your question distribution for laptops is going to begin next week so if you're an incoming Kinder that are dual immersion schools or any of those clothes for that matter W distribution schedule that you're but will be coming to you for our other students who need a replacement computer or a new computer in grades one through eight that will be available at a distribution schedule. Duff that your principal will also be let letting you know when that there was a question about will teachers make this hard that the schedules made yes so the teachers do make and create their their own schedule sometimes has to be in collaboration with their qualities I'm especially if there's some team teaching going on indefinitely with their site Administration they're making sure that all of the Schools file schedules do makes sense and also remember you will have a personalized schedule for your individual child coming to you look for the in the backpack there was another question about expectations on the first day of school so what I would say to this is you know the first day of school is really for students to orient themselves with their teacher with what their schedule they take it very slow especially because of disconcerning being being particularly for our younger one but even for those that are transition from elementary into the intermediate levels and so we know that all of this will take some time so just expect you to teacher to be really hand-holding both students and parents during the first week we have made it very clear Mission I think because relationships are are part of our district core values that the very first thing before we been to academics and and all of those sort of rigorous things that we want our teachers and our students to really build on a developed good trusting relationships we do have a few teachers that are here I don't know if any of you would like to mention anything more with regards to first date any teacher I would like to say something so it's not when we question our Zoom applications installed in each but that's a Rudy question pretty are you there or Yoko I'm sorry what's the question on zoom apps installed an HP Chromebook Zoom I'll be available through clever it's not once the student is inside Google classroom they will find a link to access that next question will take his will the teacher have any time for 121 if the student is stuck on any homework material or is that on the parents to assist to so if you remember but I when we were looking at schedule so she could go back to the school schedule we can look at various places during the day that the student will might have one to One X here we look at if you're looking at the elementary you would see that in between each of the subject matter so between Ela and math for example there is for this teacher there is a little bit of a so at that point the teacher could pull in students for one-to-one or small group if they wanted to really Linda to differential for the more as a child or a specific group you'll also notice at the very end you see something called Virtual Office hours during this time parents and students could make an appointment with the teacher and they would meet virtually to discuss any questions or concerns Additionally you will notice that one wins days these days are really there sometime carved out for that intervention piece that on an ongoing basis teachers are monitoring the student work and obviously if there are any questions I believe there was a question to about how do we communicate with our teachers Yoko if you don't mind going talk to the side where you could you show the email icon I don't know if he can go to that but obviously there is that way and if you want to add Yokel anything Google classroom this is what the student Google Classroom look like and there are three people and under people under teachers this will be for your teacher's name will be located and all the way to the right there's a little mail app and you can email the teacher oh that's wonderful there is a question about when backpacks will be distributed is there a time and date for specific grades up the answer is very soon we're actually trying to pack up all materials at each grade level each student will have their own backpack as we said they are busy checking those out as we speak. A schedule will be published and and all the parents for a specific site will be notified in advance I'm obviously this will take him cuz he's a few days before school starts to expect all of that to be happening next week all of the distribution okay next question will packets and manipulative items be provided to students I would imagine so all surprised materials anything that the students need will be a number one if you don't find them in the backpack very likely the teacher will be probably informing the parents about upcoming units were manipulatives will be a priority and so I would imagine that the cheater would more than likely sort of inform the parents about which which materials and supplies will be needed just a note on that a lot of actually all of our students participate in Visual and Performing Arts in the elementary grade levels what we do have are the instruments musical instruments that will also be going home as well as any art supplies that will be necessary during the first couple of weeks of Arts instruction Okay so let's see how are we doing on time we're doing really great we still have about a good 10 to 15 minutes of Q&A so let me look at the chat box okay so we have a question here about Parent Access to music and art classes are sorry let me see parents be notified us that he will somebody was asking would I get an email from the teacher before school starts because the teacher is not assigned at this moment what you will probably expecting correct me if I'm wrong inoko is an invitation for the actual Google classroom communicate and so on and the questions are coming so it's kind of hard to scroll on time so bear with me yes you know I I can answer some of the questions that are coming through generally speaking there are some questions about a student email and student computers so for all of our kindergarten students or new students coming to our district your logon information your student from your school so for the Kinder students going to be distributed the day that we're give be giving out computers okay so those are all be individualized so that you'll have access to your email as far as another question with respect you of having access internet you know everyone's in a very unique situation please work with your principal okay call your school talk to your principal email your principal and they will be in touch with our office to accommodate you the best way we can to make sure that your child has everything you need to be successful in school and again with respect to materials and computer distribution all that information will start coming through parent line over the weekend all including up to and including a Monday will be notifying quote Rudy there's a question about Head Start and I know you might be in a sing with the child development team there's a question about will they be given laptops as well that's a great question I'm going to hold off on answering that can just yet I do know they have a special device and I cannot think of the name of it right now it is almost as if it's a different device I know it's not it's not it's similar to a laptop but it's a different device if you contact the office of the Child Development the office of Head Start they'll tell you specifically what that device is the answer is yes to some type of distance running for our youngest I just kind of think of the name device right now it's new to us this one's for you though is there a chance for students to interact with each other virtually you know what that the classroom and the teacher but there is a way yes okay so hopefully in a more controlled manner so so but the answer is yes they are we really are trying to to keep in mind how much Social connection needs to happen in order to build community and so rest assured that are that are teachers are also being mindful. If there isn't internet at the this is another question because my child won't be home during school time his babysitter does not have internet Rudy or Yoakam okay so we'll try to come back to that if not again a reminder if we don't get to your questions today and we don't have the answers right away don't worry we will be making sure that all of the morphe the asked questions are unanswered questions do go on a document that will be uploaded in the next few days so that we can answer as many as we can because we know the least you have a lot of question okay so we will continue with question okay great okay let's see so forth so here it's the same thing just got done early sessions will teachers be teaching students via Zoom or some other format during school hours Yoko do you want to take a step at that or Rudy during inspection the teacher will either choose to use Google meet or zoom and the parents answer I should be able to find that link either email to them or through Google classroom or clever so you know they will be using so in here there's a little bit of confusion Yoko if you don't mind staying on for this one so for grade 6 students they'll be required daily instructions / Zoom meetings for grade 7 through 8 it will be blocked do you want to explain cheese that out a little bit Miss Elise I can I can actually speak to that a little bit yes I generally speaking. correct there is there is daily instruction and k-6 provided resume and those schedules be available on Google classroom and a very specific to each teacher and grade level on the other hand school we are going to block scheduling, I would work with your principles and work with your school to to get the exact schedule so that you know how to support your student ID Chicago Temple and Garvey are doing black but to be clear for all students there will be some sort of daily interaction and daily instruction I please please know that that is part of a of our reopening plan grading policy around distance learning is a superintendent's question I know that we're still trying to reconcile some of our local Education Agency policies when it comes to grading and to try to adapt to our distance learning module said that will also be communicated on your date did you have anything were to add around that no I think that's that's it thank you so basically so this is another question. parents and students were accessing same Google classroom with same student email address as the one the student use before so it's the state might be the same student but it completely different Google classroom mr. Torres if they're assigned to a different teacher yes I understand that coronavirus correctly this is an superintendent question so we'll make sure that we get this answer back to you how would Woodcraft Rangers be available to students at this time because of the law and around safety proximity Community transmission zip code it all of that we're still negotiating trying to figure out a way to possibly provide supervision for a limited amount of stew for parents that meet a specific criteria so that is not around to answer right now however I know that our superintendent has been diligently trying to work with Woodcraft Rangers to see if that is possibility so that we'll we'll need to come from her office so please be on the lookout for that as well not a guarantee but we are working on it okay there is another question it's let me see here so is the shooting that just is just moving from elementary to Garvey intermediate will she get a new and I read an email or continues to use our old GSD email to access Google Classroom it's the same classroom email for that student separate sweetie email and then if you don't mind for the parents review student work will we need a different email address to access the same used by the student oh Yoko I want to take a stab at them you know I don't believe so I believe that did that that parent would just be able to look through their students email through their Google classroom I'm your car would you like to add anything to that earlier and that Guardian summer is just a basic summary with missing assignments upcoming class work I'm just like basic announcements another question are headsets with microphones provided by the district no they are not at this time another question do work assignments need to be turned in on it then will there will there be packets handed out every so often you'll go so usually they will all I believe I believe everything will be available digitally although I know workbooks are going home I'm not exactly sure on that definitely contact your teacher teacher how soon will we be receiving a Google invite from the first grade teachers I would imagine that it's probably going to sent out as soon as what's up what's happening just to give you a sneak peek behind the scenes right now we are also trying to figure out classroom rosters we know that there are a lot of families that have not been able to tell me then finalize their registration and sew classes for the most part has been created once that happens then we can start to assign students to individual teachers from their the teachers wants to have their own roster more in the middle of all of that right now then they're able to set up their Google classrooms and send out an email invitation so you'll probably be getting that invitation within the next week or so but remember that that teacher will not actually be teaching until the 24th so you have up until the 24th to accept that invitation that correct okay let's see we have a couple more minutes so parents will get the Guardian summary get email that is correct please please contact the teacher will teachers still use Class Dojo to communicate with parents yes the answer is for you'll have to check with your individual teacher not all teachers have class dojo but most teachers I think have been using it so you may want to check with your face okay let's see school starts August 24th yes it does time will be 8:30 but the schedule that we sent to you or that sorry that we will be sent to you for your exact starting time every student will have their own schedule there may be a difference when it comes to start times so but rest assured it will happen in the morning in Cape May start may start earlier may start a little later but it all depends on the teacher but everybody starts on the 24th let's see if we can take a couple more questions will principal contact parents to pick up backpacks and laptops absolutely you may get up get a call you may get an email or there maybe just in general some sort of notification being pushed out via the district so yes but the answer is yes you will be notified in advance because we want to do this systematically and safely do you recommend parents purchasing headsets you know you can see I'm using some you just said they're just regular airpods it just helped the student many students just a very they don't have to be expensive you can use a regular or just regular like little earbuds like this you could use the bigger ones those are not required but if you feel especially if you have a activity in your home or other children sitting next to each other in the home you may want to invest about but we're not asking you to to necessarily purchase them obviously it depends on your own personal resources let's see Yoko do you see anything there I know these questions are happy. Yes more and more we have Alvin thank you so much he saying thank you so much team Garvey school district I really appreciate all the effort please kindly guide has turned to finally be able to use all this new technology stay safe and keep in touch so much I want to make sure that I say thank you parents for we have eight 9 almost 90 participants we know that there is a big sacrifice for you to be here today but that shows us just how important this information is for you I can tell you that part of our I'm going to miss at Garvey is to continuously work with mr. Tauruses teen in with as many teachers as possible to make sure that this isn't just one stock situation but that we continuously bring back even more deeper dies tutorials if you went where we can take the time to dive into an application and basically have owed entire digital literacy course for parents that is something that you are interested in we have already started to talk about that so we can have like little pork shots if you will so that parents can just take the time to learn what it is. students are working on and using so that you have more confidence and supporting them so please be on the lookout for that so we can take a couple more questions the offices of the schools being available to take phone calls they are already open for business a lot of people do not have not maybe seeds that are offices are open we've actually paid Place poster and I think some schools maybe even some banners you can call ahead make an appointment and do or you know try to to knock on the door see if maybe they can let you in obviously we do have nyct personal protective equipment make sure that you yourself are protected using your mouse but call ahead just to make sure you can go into the office physically under you you're just making sure that you have those safety measures in place before the call ahead so good it's a good idea starting next week you'll probably get a ton of phone call so please one thing that we would like to implore here I know the tea where's would probably be applauding here I know certainly our team Rudy's team we want to make sure parents that you make sure that you have rent working email address in the system up in time parents forget to change that they've moved on you know they no longer use Hotmail for example and but that's still in the system and so we wouldn't know current email is so all of our emails that are being pushed out from our district are going to that possibly old email so please make sure that you update your contact information okay so let's take one more question uploading work on Google Classroom has been challenging for me will there be a PDF with step by step instructions on how to do this you're sure you know that's it really depends on the type of work that's being asked for some Mission because there's Google Docs Google Slides Google forms regular PDF regular document so it depends on the format on how to submit the work because they other options question as far as the distribution is sometime next week I just text message and we have to bring the laptop that's being used so that they could I can connect but is it one per child 1 / 4 okay thank you okay and then finally this will Segway us into the closing of our Workshop today or our meeting today there is a question about are we texting information are we sending it via email what is the deal with the district the answer is all of the above into Subway's us into the next life where we want you by parents please stay connected which is here are some ways you're there are multiple ways to stay connected with us first of all he checking your parents updates from superintendent Anita Shoe Depot Studies Weekly for parents and she sends them via email to this is why we were saying make sure that you have your updated email addresses and you'll see you'll go if you can point to the little address there when I going to click on it but on the very far left we would encourage you to please keep me updated through that's the latest and I most important probably information for parents you can also email your teacher can your principal make sure that you stay current on what those those contacts are we also have a hotline at the district setup for especially for parents and you'll see the numbers there we haven't Spanish hotline and we have a Chinese and Vietnamese Hotline in it maybe it's not about technology but you can ask me about registration all of that information and we will make sure that we routed to the right call the school to speak to a school Community coordinator I believe most of them are back next week so he's another way also as I mentioned before you can set up an appointment to come to the school office the school offices are open and ready for business and so an Instagram account I hope that you can all join us R&R handle it at Garvey CIA so those are some ways if you can move on to the next slide we want to thank you parents for taking the time how to join us today again this is the start of a much longer conversation we will be virtually at least hand-in-hand until we get to see you in person and so we are here to support you so thank you again for joining us today and for your support remember that the session is being recorded and the content will be uploaded in on our district website in a few days so you can check their so goodbye and take care thank you team
